Jump-starting a car may seem difficult and dangerous, but it’s something easy enough for anyone to do — as long as you follow directions. If you do it incorrectly, you could severely damage your Chevrolet and injure yourself. That’s why we at Chandler Chevrolet want to make sure you jump-start your car properly.
 
Gather your Tools
You’ll need gloves, jumper cables, a flashlight (if it’s nighttime), and another car or rechargeable jumper pack that can provide the juice.
 
Prepare the Vehicles
Position the cars so that the front ends are almost touching. Then, turn off the engines and open the hoods.
 
Attach the Cables
This is the most crucial step, so pay attention. Connect the cables in the following order:
1. Red clamp to positive terminal of dead battery
2. Red clamp to positive terminal of working battery
3. Black clamp to negative terminal of working battery
4. Black clamp to unpainted metal surface under the hood of the car with the dead battery (NOT the battery itself!)
 
Run the Engine
Let the working car’s engine run a few minutes to give your dead battery some juice. Then, try starting your car after 5-10 minutes.
 
Remove the Cables
If your car starts, you can remove the jumper cables. Follow the same process listed above but in reverse order. That means start by removing the black clamp from the metal and ending with detaching the red clamp from the dead battery.
