2018 Chevrolet Silverado vs. 2018 Chevrolet Colorado

Among truck companies, Chevrolet is a long-standing giant, with over a century of experience in pickup-building. Today, Chevrolet makes two trucks in particular to appeal to the car-buying public: the mid-size Colorado and the full-size Silverado. However, if you haven’t heard anything about them before, the question is, “What’s the difference?”

Chevy Truck Power

Both the Colorado and the Silverado come with a set of three engines each.

In the Colorado, these include an efficient 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a more powerful 3.6-liter V6, and a strong Duramax® 2.8-liter turbo-diesel. These engines can handle any day-to-day work needs that you might encounter, with between 3,500 and 7,700 pounds of maximum towing capacity.

The Silverado, on the other hand, comes equipped for even larger jobs, as its engines include a torquey 4.3-liter V6, a 5.3-liter V8 (with best-in-class V8 fuel economy), and a roaring 6.2-liter V8. This line of engines gives the Silverado a maximum towing capacity of between 7,600 and 12,500 pounds.

Colorado Advantages

The Colorado holds a few distinct advantages as a truck choice. First, it is more affordable than the full-size truck model without sacrificing Chevy’s truck engineering toughness. In addition, due to its more compact size, the Colorado doesn’t need to use a ton of power to move things around, amounting to far less fuel consumption, and can maneuver much better than its sibling in tight spaces. Finally, if off-road driving is your goal, the Colorado is the clear choice due to its off-road optimized ZR2 trim level.

Silverado Advantages

The Silverado, on the other hand, comes with all the advantages of its greater size. Its cabin is more spacious for passengers; its bed can fit larger cargo with up to 97.77 inches in length (on the Long Box); and due to its larger engines, the Silverado can move much heavier loads in the bed, with a maximum payload weight of 2,250 pounds.

Both the 2018 Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado have their own advantages — the Colorado with its more nimble size and ability to handle any day-to-day hauling needs, and the Silverado with its larger size and greater power to handle more serious work. It is simply up to your needs and preferences which of these tough trucks will suit you best. Both are available for test drives at Chandler Chevrolet.
